      Air Force Common Admission Test commonly known as AFCAT is conducted by Indian Air Force to select eligible and desirable candidates for multiple posts in Flying and Ground Duty. The selection is done for the officers in flying, technical & non-technical branches of Air Force. Notification is released in June & December. Both males & females are eligible to apply for these posts.

      CDS Exam Eligibility:

      A. Nationality: The person should be a citizen of India

      B. Age:

      1. Flying Branch & NCC Special Entry – 20 to 24 Years. (Commercial license holders from DGCA are eligible up to age of 26 years.)
      2. Ground Duty: 20 to 26 Years

      C. Marital Status:

      1. Below age of 25 Years the candidate must be unmarried. Widows/widowers/divorcee below 25 years are not eligible to apply.
      2. Married persons in the age group of 25 to 26 years are eligible to apply but they will not be allowed to live with their family.
      3. No candidate is allowed to marry till the completion of his training.

      D. Educational Qualification:

      1. Flying Branch: 50% in each in Mathematics & Physics in 10+2 and Graduation in any discipline with 60% marks.
      1. Ground Duty Technical Branch: 50% in each in Mathematics & Physics in 10+2 and  Engineering degree in the any of following subjects-

      a. Computer / IT / Communication / Electrical / Electronics / Instrumentation / Space Craft
      b. Aerospace / Mechanical /Industrial / production / manufacturing / Robotics / Nanotechnology / Metallurgy / Industrial / Automotive

      3. Ground Duty ( Non-Technical Branch ):

      a.  Admin : 10+2 & graduation in any discipline with minimum of 60% marks
      b. Education : 10+2 with 50% & Graduation in any discipline with 60% & postgraduation with minimum of 50% marks.

      NOTE: Candidate in final year of graduation are also eligible to appear for the exam.

      1. EKT ( Engineering Knowledge Test will be for Technical branches only) The test will test the three areas – Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
      2. The Exam will be objective type with MCQs.
      3. A negative marking of 1/3rd will be applied for wrong answers.

      Syllabus for AFCAT Exam:

      1. English

      Comprehension, Error Detection, Sentence Completion/ Filling in of correct word, Synonyms, Antonyms and Testing of Vocabulary, Idioms and Phrases.

      2. General Awareness

      History, Geography, Civics, Politics, Current Affairs, Environment, Basic Science, Defence, Art, Culture, Sports, etc.

      3. Numerical Ability

      Decimal Fraction, Time and Work, Average, Profit & Loss, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion and Simple Interest, Time & Distance (Trains/Boats & Streams).

      4. Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test

      Verbal Skills and Spatial Ability.

      Standard of AFCAT Exam

      The standard of Numerical Ability Questions will be of Matriculation level. The standard of questions in other subjects will be of graduation level (Indian University).

      Selection Procedure

      The selection of the candidates will be done based upon clearing the various stages of the selection process:-

      a. Phase 1: AFCAT Exam

      the candidates who apply for AFCAT need to appear in AFCAT Exam ( For technical branches EKT Test is alsorequired ) NCC Special Entry & Metrological Candidates are not required to appear in AFCAT Exam. They are called directly for SSB  Interview

      b. Phase 2: SSB Interview

      1. The candidates qualifying the AFCAT exam are called for the SSB Interview in AFSB centers.The testing at AFSB would consist of three stages as given below:-
        • Stage-I Screening Test: Officer Intelligence Rating Test along with Picture Perception and discussion test will be conducted on the first day. Stage-I test is a screening test and only those who qualify would undergo subsequent testing. All Stage-I qualified candidates would be subjected to document check to ascertain their eligibility for the branches applied for. Candidates who either do not qualify in Stage-I or do not meet the required eligibility criteria would be sent back on the first day itself.
        • Stage-II: SSB Interview: Psychological test, Group Tests and Interview would commence after document check for the next five days.
        • For Flying Branch: Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) would be administered to recommended candidates only. CPSS is once in a lifetime test. Candidates who have failed the CPSS/ PABT in an earlier attempt or a Flight Cadet suspended from flying training at Air Force Academy will not be eligible.
        • Physical Fitness: Candidates are advised to be physically fit when you report for SSB in order to be able to undergo various tests at AFSB. You should aim to achieve an ability to run 01 mile (1.6 kms) in 10 minutes, 10 push ups and 3 chin ups.

      c. Phase 3: Final Merit List

      Final Merit List will be prepared on the basis of composite score obtained in
      1. AFCAT Exam
      2. SSB Interview
      10% of the vacancies are reserved for NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate holders in Ground Duty (Technical and Nontechnical) Branches. Allotment of PC/ SSC in Ground Duty (Technical and Non-technical) Branches would be based on number of vacancies, performance in the selection process and the choice given by the candidates. Medical Fitness: All the qualified candidates will have to go through medical testing & need to qualify the minimum medical standards laid down by Indian Air Force. The medical standards for Flying branch and nonflying branch will be a bit different.

      TRAINING: The finally selected candidates who are medically fit go through the training at Air Force Training Facilities. The Flying & Technical branch candidates go through the training of 74 Weeks. While ground duty admin & other branches go through a training of 52 weeks. After the training the pass out candidates are commissioned as flying officers in Air Force.

      Physical Conditioning. Prospective candidates are advised to keep themselves in good physical condition to adapt to physical training at AFA which encompasses running, swimming, rope climbing and other forms of physical training/conditioning in which they would undergo mandatory tests during training.
